Éva,

Congratulations on the anniversary of the Hungarian Spectrum. I can only imagine the dedication and commitment involved in making this the 'must read' blog for us English speaking people interested in Hungarian politics. You have opened a world hitherto not available to us. A big thank you or köszönöm! from us all.

Vladimir

Thank you for your dedicated work!

Odin's lost eye

Congratulations on your first years efforts, a labour of Heracles but very enjoyable to read.
As my Scots friends would say “Lang may yer lumb reek!” (Long may your chimney smoke).
I only wish I had discovered your work before It has given me a sort of understanding into the curious world in which I now live!
I understand your feelings about György Szabad. I once had a similar teacher a “sea daddy” as we would call him. He a Chief Petty Officer could read the sea like an open book. I would have given an awful lot to know all he knew.
There is much wrong in the political sphere in Hungary, one of the problems is that there was no F.W.DeClerk, no Archdishop Desmond TuTu, no Nelson Mandela and worst of all No “Truth and Reconciliation Commission”. This would have drawn the sting from the past and allowed for Public Atonement.
Another problem is that there is no political home for the right of centre and non-socialists to go. This may explain the rise in the support for Jobbik. The leadership of Fides are behaving very badly. They seek to emulate the German Nazis in the way they wish to establish a political hegemony to last for at least 20 years. Mr Orban seems to live on a different planet to the rest of us, either he has some sort of hold over his friends and top supporters or they themselves are a bunch of loony-toons, which I do not think they are. Orban reminds me some times of the Lord High Executioner in the Mikado. He has got a little list of political (Society) offenders etc. If he actually has hard evidence of wrongdoing by Government Ministers then he must pass it to the competent authorities for investigation. If he has hard evidence and does not pass it to the Hungarian equivalent of the UI.K. Department of Public Prosecutions, Orban lays himself open to charges of ‘Concealing a Crime(s), The idea of Fides instituting a “tisztogatás” with all that that implies would land Hungary in the European Court –many times over- or are they going to re-open Recsk to hold the enemies of Fides and others (foreigners etc)? Unfortunatly 60 Andrassy u is I think now in private hands, but that may not deter him.
Only one country in the EU has drastically changed its constitution as Fides proposes and that was France in 1958. The EU was only 6 nations strong at the time and France was politically in a big mess when the French army took over Algeria and paratroops landed in Corsica. A new constitution was drawn up and accepted by about 79% of those who voted. This ended the 4th republic and heralded the start of the 5th. I do not think that Orban is even in the same league as “le Grand Charles”, let alone the same division. I seriously wonder what Modern Europe would do if Orban tried the same trick? Surely Orban knows that Hungary has signed up to the European Union with all that that implies. France had a good reason to change to the 5th Republic, and voted it in at a referendum, Hungary does not!

Congratulations and thank you!
I too wish I had discovered this blog sooner.

Adrian

Yes, Eva, an enormous thank you for your hard work over the previous year: just contemplating what you have done deters me from writing my own.

Odin's post - a sort of summary of the highlights for me - outlines many of the conclusions I have drawn from reading your blog and its associated comments.

"No “Truth and Reconciliation Commission”. This would have drawn the sting from the past and allowed for Public Atonement."

I have to agree with this now, Gyurcsány's government has been punished for the sins of its fathers.

"no political home for the right of centre and non-socialists to go."

True now that SZDSZ has almost completely destroyed itself, and the MDF continues to fail to capture the public imagination.

"Fides ... seek to emulate the German Nazis"

Orbán is no Nazi, the Nazi's believed in their program and would suffer destruction rather than failure. Orbán is above all a political survivor.

"Only one country in the EU has drastically changed its constitution as Fides proposes and that was France in 1958."

Since the collapse of coalition, I think the only way for accountable government in Hungary is through constitutional reform, I would like to see a directly elected executive presidency, without this the EU is going to end up running Hungary not the Hungarian people. A dangerous situation for both Hungary and the EU, unless Hungary's long history has taught it that being a satellite is a happier situation than being a nation-state.

György Szabad was the parlament speaker for MDF, and not for MDP.

Eva S. Balogh

Cserbak: "György Szabad was the parlament speaker for MDF, and not for MDP."

I don't understand your comment. Szabad was the president of the whole house as member of MDF. I didn't write anything else.
