I find it hard to believe that the Republicans do not recognize how dangerous it is to schmooze with a well-known populist demagogue and extreme-right politician like Viktor Orban. Isn't there any expert of Eastern Europe around the Republican Party leadership? Because of this Orban-visit, they may become target of the progressive intelligentsia around the world. They should reconsider this visit one more time and cancel it in a diplomatic way.

Anyone knows the view of the US and Fidesz on the Russian-German GasPipe?

Has Viktor Orban criticized Agneta Merkel for Germany pushing on with it? They met some months ago.

Did ever US officially criticize Germany for it?

Sorry for being a bit off-Hungary, but at least I am partly on-Orban.

The reason Bush refused to meet with Orban in 2002, paraphrased, from a staffer at the House Foreign Relations Committee: 'tell him to think twice the next time he buys Swedish fighter jets instead of American ones...'

Bauer

Eva, dont you hear its Orban who's been the President of Hungary since 2002? You should.

Prolly thats something you dont hear very often in Klubradio.

dave, dont you worry, Obama will choose Gyurcsány, they are the true forces of progression and change.

Yes, the Gripen purchase was the other cause of the rift between Orbán and the USA. But I also think that Orbán's very tolerant attitude toward the extreme right was also noticed. Especially because Nancy Brinker was US ambassador in those days who didn't tolerate the growing antisemitism in the extreme right and Orbán's cavalier attitude toward the problem. By the way, I was very impressed by Nancy Brinker and was very sorry when she was recalled in order to help Bush's fund-raising efforts. I thought that the Bush cousin was totally useless and April Foley is not much better.

Bauer, the hard fact is that Gyurcsany had excellent relationship with George W. Bush, a Republican, in spite of the ideological differences. (The ideological differences would be worth an entire post as Gyurcsany is the true believer of market economy while Orban is visibly affected by the memories of Kadar's goulash communism). This again demonstrates that a seasoned politician like Gyurcsany is truly able to represent Hungary in the international scene while Orban creates just unpleasant fiascos that drag Hungary down. Whether the US President will be called McCain or Obama, the Hungarian-American relations will not be affected. Orban would ruin these relations, no matter who would be the president.

Eva, I vividly remember how keenly Nancy listened to our reports about the growing antisemitism and its relationship to Orban and his "center-right" party. That interest was completely missing in later ambassador - writing letters to them was completely futile. Such a loss for the country. :(

I think very high of her. She was a fantastic asset. She had genuine interest in the country and even after she left her post she returned several times to Budapest. She became a patron of modern Hungarian art, and she even organized exhibitions of Hungarian art in the USA. She goes back often to promote awareness of breast cancer.

I think it was prior to her appointment that there had been talk of Alexander Vershbow's appointment as a possible ambassador to Budapest. I knew Vershbow from his student days and I was very enthusiastic about his going to Budapest, but in the last minute he was appointed to US Ambassador to NATO and later to Russia. I must say that I didn't regret her subsequent appointment instead of Sandy's whom, by the way, I liked very much. I see that Sandy Vershbow is now ambassador to Korea.

Dave, the solution is Republicans should listen to Klubradio more often or read your ultimate words just to avoid the world, the USA collapsing courtesy of an evil politician from a little Eastern Europen country.

btw anyone would tell CNN the Belgrad riots this week was not in Budapest?

Thanks, Bauer
