Isn't it the case though, that Duna TV somehow has showed better "bang for the buck?" So that money earmarked for MTV hasn't gone back to the central pot, it's gone to Duna TV. 3 channels for "public service broadcasting" in Hungary, and enough programmes for one quarter.

And whilst Duna TV make better programming, wouldn't it have been more sensible to have reviewed all this years ago, scrubbed off MTV and replaced them with Duna MTV (as that is what will probably happen eventually).

Either way, whats happening now smacks of complacency and incompetence. The MSZP - they never really did have a plan, did they?

Indeed, that's the case. What I understand Duna TV is a great deal better than MTV.

The situation is absolutely the same in Poland.

Polish counterpart of MTV - TVP is led by political apparatchicks who have no idea at all about medias and finances. Of course, TVP is a tool of political propaganda for every government, so no one in the parliament really want to do anything about it. KRRiTV - a superivising comitee which consist of parliamentary nominees is another battlefield for parties. Nothing more.

As a result, TVP announced recently that by the end of 2009 it will have a 200 mln-zlotys-high debt. Of course - mainly because of the fact that people don't pay licence fee (pol. abonament radiowo-telewizyjny). And the reason for this is obvious - no one wants to pay the money for woefully boring programmes and bonuses for political nominees who care only about their interest. But politicians, arguing that privatisation of TVP and abolition of abonament would lead to a demise of public tv (what a disaster, indeed...)hide their vital interest in keeping TVP under. So the vicious circle closes - we pretend that we pay licence fee, politicians pretend that we need TVP. Everyone's happy?

But maybe recent report about critical condition of tvp finances would force decision-makers to take concrete steps...?
