You will not get votes in Hungary with a program on behalf of the Romas. The great majority of the population is hostile and afraid of the Romas. Better education is needed for Hungarians on race relations.

"although the Kádár regime did a lot for the Roma population, especially in the sense of providing work for them, it did nothing for a good thirty years about raising the educational level"

It is unfortunate again to read such a misinforming statement from a supposedly reliable source. Under communism the Roma/Gypsies had all the support from the government and had they have the motivation to finish schooling they would have become a part of normal society (some of them actually did). The government gave them FREE education and FREE housing... not to talk about the frequent financial aids of the local city/county governments.

Comparing them to the blacks in America is another mistake, to start out with the Roma were not brought in to Hungary as slaves but as well known they are nomadic wanderers/migrants often without roots and a proper motivation to settle and integrate.

"the Roma were not brought in to Hungary as slaves "
they were not brought in, but they were exploited that way. I actually read that in Transsylvania Roma were traded on slave markets until well into the 19th century.

On the current situation, I found some insights here:

"I actually read that in Transsylvania Roma were traded on slave markets until well into the 19th century"

And this equates them with blacks now???
I would bet that this practice applied to non-romas as well and certainly does not explain their lack of motivation when the government provided FREE education and housing to them. How well do they do in any other countries around the World??

As for the Transsylvanian slave markets, they were explicitely trading Roma people. Here a poster from 1852.

You know what pete!? I was dreaming. I was in a luxury hotel in Europe. I was at a scientific conference giving a speach on evolutionary psychology. I was speaking very passionately about the subject. I woke up and bounded out of bed still almost ranting passionately. At that moment I looked down on the floor and say an anule lizard (the lizard had gotten into my house from a hole caused by Katrina-I let the lizard stay because it scared away the roaches). The lizard seemed to be listening to my rant very intendly, very adoringly, almost as if worshiping me. I said to the lizard "You know what I mean don't you lizard. You come from a long line of ancestors that bares out what I'm saying". The lizard looked at me and seemed to say "Yes brother, I know what you mean. We're strong, we're fit. we will endure."
