Perhaps what we also learn is that while the comments on this blog are one of several honourable exceptions, the comments sections of internet news sites are a good place to discover a range of colourful, sometimes extreme, sometimes ill-informed, or even plain lunatic views.

My two thoughts are that firstly it is difficult to know how representative these views are. Secondly, there appears to be a contradiction here - lots of those people who would rather not have heard about this story seem to be very happy to debate it.

Of course. Plus I should have mentioned that ATV's readership is most likely a great deal more liberal than some other sites.

Oh, I think the comment boxes pretty accurately reflect what a certain constituency thinks. Normally you would have to get people drunk to say such things in public, but the promise of anonimity provides the necessary Dutch courage in e-age. You should see internet as a free focus group for the underbelly of society.

I'd rather say left wing people, mostly MSZP supporters. But don't have any illusions, they are not a single bit less racist or homophobous than any other part of the political spectrum when it comes to their ordinary life. A perfect example is that Orbán is still frequently called pejoratively Orsós on forums with this type of audience referring to his alleged gypsy origins.

I always found it bitterly funny when MSZP supporters turned out to be so racist in their everyday life that some hardcore hard-righters could learn from them a lot.

I would argue with you that the majority of people who watch ATV is MSZP supporters. As for racism, the anti-Gypsy prejudice is very great in Hungary. Close to 80% of the population, so that includes MSZP voters as well but among them the prejudice is a bit less prevalent than in the right.
