Very interesting post.

"The message was: Don't push us too hard on our democracy deficits and don't insist on changing our laws because we are ardent patriots who will defend our independence."

Very true if the push becomes too hard it will lead to an adverse reaction.

"But the size of the crowd doesn't change the facts: according to the latest statistics only 16-17% of the voting age population would vote for Fidesz."

Here we shouldn't be so quick to draw conclusions. These polls are done via phone. And many people simply hang up if they hear a name of pollster they are disgusted with. This leads to widely differing results in different pollsters. I think a Fidesz pollster claimed 27% within the total population while the MSZP one claimed 16%.

"The great majority of Hungarians support Hungary's membership in the European Union."

That's certainly true for the moment. But recently there are huge developments in the EU, which could lead to an EU-wide blowback. There are some proposals to cut out Greek autonomy and give all important matters into the hand of a "kinevezendő gondnok" who would have the real power.

This could easily push the anti-EU numbers way wayyy up across the whole EU.

27% and 16%. Assuming the same number of samples the average 21.5% isn't flattering either. But the trend is important. That is the free-fall of support of the FIDESz and Orban.

Berlin is proposing appointing a euro-zone commissioner who would have the power to veto budget decisions in Greece. Calling it a caretaker ("gondok') is just sheer sensationalism. This actually may push up the pro-EU numbers showing that the EU is not a powerless organization and is ready to step up for the members and Euro of course in this case.

This is the article from the FT: http://on.wsj.com/wHdGjv

I believe the same is going on in Hungary right now. Despite of the noisy wingnut commandos on the street last weekend a referendum would show that sanity still prevails on Planet Hungary. I like the "adverse reaction" analogy. It's like getting a rash from a medicine that saves your life.

By the way we already saw huge pro-FIDESZ crowds on the streets. Like in 2002 at the parliament. Look what followed. Not one but two lost elections. Go, lemmings, go!

Tell me about it :-))

@Kormos Touché! xD

Transparent. So Fidesz can put some retiree asses, bored
with nothing to do, into buses and have them parade around
the capital. So what? As with the budget deficits, it's time that
the EU flexed its muscles. If the morons in Hungary cannot understand that they get 5 times more than they pay it; that they belong to a democratic union of states with all its attendant safety features and financial security...than they'll deserve the monstrous storm that comes with the Jobbik's asinine wish to "turn East" (Russia). After 5 years in Moscow
I will take the liberty to tell the Russophiles what they can expect: that which comes off the ass's ass.

`it should be noteworthy to one and all that, while the Orban government has been told what must be done in several laws...they have yet to enact changes in any one of them. As per usual, they're waiting to see the exact changes as if they didn't know which items needed to be repealed themselves!
They're hoping for errors and that some parts of the enacted laws can remain which they would later 'correct'...

Odin's Lost Eye

I think that the Viktator is has issued a warning to Europe. “It is DO NOT Mess with ME! I am above you. I control Hungary. You prosecute me in the European Court I will just seize the fines from the people. I will lead them to a righteous hatred of all things non-Hungarian.”
He believes is that Europe is on the way out. The Euro is finished and from the resulting chaos he will regain the Carpathian Basin.

He is hoping that Greece will default on its debts and that the contagion will spread to both Italy and France.

He will use every trick in the book including bankrupting Hungary to increase the stress on the European banking system.

If necessary he will harass and starve his peoples to gain his ultimate end.

I love Hungary

Viktor's demonstartion was actually counter-ptoductive.

The man just doesn't seem to understand that the real world is trying to prevent a tyranny of the majority.

Calling for mass demonstrations to confirm his popularity, in spite of his dictatorial tendencies and his total anhilation of the rule of law, just serves to present him even more in the same light as Hitler. Hitler could bring out the masses too.
